I’m nervous in the water, should I take swimming lessons?

Being nervous in water is one of the best reasons to take swimming lessons as
an adult. Lessons not only give you the skills to swim and exercise in water, they
also give you essential lifesaving skills should you ever find yourself in a situation
that is out of your control. Swimming lessons give you the confidence to enter
swimming pools or the sea, knowing you have the skills and confidence to enjoy
it.

What are the benefits of swimming lessons as an adult?

Learning to swim not only empowers adults to stay afloat but also equips them with the ability to
assist others in water emergencies. This is especially important when swimming with children or
other adults who might need assistance in the water. Aside from the practical skills, swimming is
an excellent exercise for the whole body. It relieves stress, improves fitness, gives you a cardio
workout and is low impact on joints and muscles, ideal as you get older or recover from injury.

Can I learn to swim at any age?

Yes, swimming lessons can be taken at any age from small infants to old age.
While a certain level of mobility is necessary to fully appreciate swimming
lessons, they can be adapted to your level of skill from Beginner to Intermediate
and you can practice as often as you like in the pool.

Should I be embarrassed to take adult swimming lessons?

You should not be embarrassed about taking swimming lessons. There are many
reasons why you may not have learned to swim as a child. It's possible you never
needed the skill until you had your own children and realised how much you were
missing out on. You are furthering your confidence in the water and learning a
lifesaving skill that can be applied in real life. Adult swimming lessons are
popular in our Kildare Leisure Club proving that many adults are in the same
position of learning to swim well into adulthood.

How long does it take to learn to swim?

Learning to swim is a very personal experience. If you have a fear of water or are
apprehensive about holding yourself underwater, learning this skill might take a
little longer. If you learn at a standard rate and have no fear of water, it might
take as little as 20-25 hours to become proficient at basic swimming skills.
Depending on the length of lessons, you might have your basic training done
within 4-6 months of regular lessons.

Where do swimming lessons take place?

Swimming lessons, under the supervision of a professional teacher, take place in
Osprey Leisure Club in Naas. The leisure club is part of Osprey Hotel and can be
accessed via the hotel entrance, or a dedicated entrance to the leisure club if
you’re not a guest. Our 20-metre swimming pool is ideal for lessons, and you
can unwind in the sauna and steam room after a lesson.

What should I bring to swimming lessons?

You do not need much to learn to swim. You should wear typical swimwear to the
pool specifically designed for swimming like one-piece suits, bikinis, or swim trunks.
Bring a towel and some toiletries if you plan to shower before you leave. You can take some
water and a snack with you for after, after all learning to swim is an exercise.

How do I know if I am a beginner or an improver?

Beginners in swimming lessons will learn the fundamentals of swimming such as
floating, kicking and pulling. You should have practice on your own if you are
comfortable to get better between lessons. Once you feel you have mastered the
basics, you can move on to intermediate lessons where you will learn swimming
strokes and gain better knowledge of swimming.
